Away Day Guide – Ipswich Town
Our first trip to Portman Road in the Premier League since 2002, which ended in defeat, so here’s hoping for some League Cup form when we return where we had an excellent 1-3 win in the Carabao Cup last season. Here’s your guide for the day.
TICKETING INFORMATION
Fulham’s allocation for this fixture has sold out.
GETTING TO PORTMAN ROAD
BY CAR
FROM LONDON, THE SOUTH-EAST, SOUTH-WEST AND SOUTH WALES
Note: There are several sections of long-term roadworks on the A12 between the M25 and Ipswich, which will increase your journey time. There is also the possibility of overnight road closures. The simple advice is to make your way to the M25, and then join the A12 near Brentwood (Junction 28 of the M25). It then takes about 90 minutes to the ground, subject of course to traffic delays, especially at peak times. If you are starting in the South-West or South Wales, you do have the option of driving via the Birmingham area (M42 to M6), though this is usually around half an hour slower than the London / M25 route. We recommend allowing at least an hour and, ideally 90 minutes, beyond the AA / Google / Sat Nav suggested journey time, to allow for possible delays.
For those not using a Sat Nav, once you reach the A12 / A14 Copdock interchange, just south of Ipswich, take the A1214 (London Road) for a couple of miles into town. As you approach the town centre area, there’s a Sainsbury’s supermarket on the left – at this point, go straight on past Sainsbury’s and then almost immediately right onto West End Road. Take the first left (after about half a mile) onto Sir Alf Ramsey Way and continue to the stadium.
BY TRAIN
It takes just under 10 minutes to walk from Ipswich station to Portman Road. As you exit the station you will see the ground and floodlights directly ahead of you. Follow Princes Street over the bridge and until you can take a left directly onto the Portman Road. There are two main train routes into Ipswich, from London and from Peterborough. Norwich is at the start/end of the mainline route through Ipswich to/from London with regular trains. The Peterborough option may be easier or cheaper if you are travelling from anywhere that passes that way – but trains are at best hourly, and even with new rolling stock, they only have a few coaches. There are limited options post-match and none at all after evening games.
BY COACH
The official club coaches will depart Motspur Park and Craven Cottage at 10am. Coach tickets for Season Ticket Holders & Members are priced at £20 for adults and £15 for juniors. For all other supporters, Coach tickets are on General Sale priced at £25 for adults and £20 for juniors
AWAY PUBS
The Station Hotel is opposite the main station, and is the official away pub. It has a garden and TV screens, with beers mostly from the Greene King stable. Most pubs immediately around the ground are for home fans only, and few pubs around the town, if any, will welcome groups of away fans, especially wearing away team colours. As always, couples, families and older people will find it a bit easier to slip into a town centre pub for a quiet beer or two.
